Population of the African continent is currently about 1.3 billion and women represent half of that population. Moreover, women in Africa produce 62% of economic activities of the continent and women make up 58% of the continent's self-employed population. On the other hand, women entrepreneurship is gaining the importance in Africa. According to Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, Africa has become, in a few years, the first continent of female entrepreneurship. In addition to this, the visibility of women in decision-making across the continent is increasing and the presence of the women in the politics is pretty high. For instance, in Rwanda, more than 60% of the parliament members are women. In the business life, academic researches shows that companies with a greater share of women on their boards of directors and executive committees tend to perform better financially.
Turkey’s largest companies are increasingly assigning women to key positions and corporate boards. And, 26% of the top executives in these companies, 26 percent are women, well above the EU average. Turkish businesswomen have already been doing business in Africa and they are looking for joint ventures.
Africa’s growth and development agenda can only succeed if the continent is able to draw on all its resources and talents, and if women are able to participate fully in economic, social and political life. Türkiye-Africa partnership aims to highlight the importance of capacity building for women in african countries and to create awareness so that women can be empowered as well as sharing their experience in changing the face of business, know-how and how to promote women-managed businesses and their access to finance.
